Born in West Texas, Paula’s love of art and animals began in her childhood with a set of Encyclopedia Brittanica. She spent hours studying the illustrative plates of every kind of bird and beast and trying to draw them. After graduating with an MA in literature from the University of Houston at Clear Lake, she began her first career as an English and Humanities instructor for a small college and art took a backseat to teaching. In 2012, she and her husband moved to Kenai, AK, and she began looking for a much needed distraction from the dark and long Alaskan winter. She found watercolor. Paula’s paintings are colorful and varied, from the delicate to the bold as she celebrates the unique personalities of her subjects. And while viewers look at her paintings, the eyes of her animals look back, reminding people that animals are watching too. Paula now lives in Boerne, TX with her husband Roger, three papillons, three bantam hens, a dwarf rabbit and a canary named Elvis.
